The Caps Cave

So as some of you may know, I have been salivating over the idea of a home theater since Rory and I first laid eyes on the beautiful blank wall in our basement. I've talked about buying a projector and sound system for a solid year at this point. Well after a bit of saving up (who would have thought that NOT spending money would let me buy something more expensive later on) and a timely price drop from Amazon, Rory and I took the plunge and ordered the thing.

Well we had everything by last Tuesday, but wanting to really set up everything correctly, we waited till Kip could come down and help put it together right. So for a few days i was teased with having everything I needed, but no Caps Cave.

Well Kip and Laurel finally got in on Saturday and suffice it to say, we had a lot more work to do than i thought. Originally i planned on just stacking my components on a wire rack bought from Target, but Kip suggested we knock out the drywall and build a shelf into the closet. Sounded great, but my area of home improvment expertise begins and ends with picture hanging and lightbulb installation, so this was going to take a bit of work.

Well 12 hours, 2 Circuit City runs, 2 Lowes runs, and about half a dozen diet cokes later, everything was done. It looks great and the picture is amazing. The sound system rocks (Rory just loves how the Base shakes the couch), and I finally have my Caps Cave.

We are going to add some jerseys to the wall, the incredible stick Dad donated to the cause (signed by the entire 07-08 team), and a nice coat of paint, but the most imporatant elements are  there. More pictures to come, but here are a few to tide you over.

Post Game Thoughts

Having had a few hours to take in the final moments from last night’s game I have a few thoughts I should convey. I don’t know that there is a worse moment in sports (other than seeing your player get injured ala Jason Campbell against the Bears last year) that absolutely sucks the wind out of your sails like losing in overtime in game 7. There is that moment of “What just happened” when you see the other team celebrating, but there is no buzzer, no lights, just blank faces on your own players. It’s heartbreaking and it feels like getting punched in the gut. My hand still hurts from hitting the banister in my house. I’ll remember for a long time standing on my deck looking up at the sky while I hear Joe Beninati talk about the tradition of the post series handshake.

My thought have calmed since last night. I’m still relatively inconsolable about the loss, but my feelings have moved from immediate anger over the officiating, frustration at the chances we had to score, and the fact that we lost to one of my most hated teams, to an acceptance that we will be a better team next year.

Frustrations

I’m not trying to complain about the officiating, but a few notes should be made. I understand that the Flyer’s player did not touch Huet directly, but there SHOULD be a rule that you cannot check someone into their goaltender, rendering them out of position. The NHL should act like they did with Sean Avery and institute that rule immediately. If players are allowed to do this, I don’t see why every single team wouldn’t be. It SHOULD be a penalty, whether it was last night or not.

While I tend to side with the idea of “swallow the whistles and let them play” I become incensed when the calls are inconsistent. The tripping call would have absolutely been made during the 1st and 2nd period, but for the 3rd and overtime period the refs hadn’t been calling anything. There were definitely penalty worthy plays which weren’t called on both sides during those periods. I don’t ask that penalties not be called entirely, or that refs call every penalty, but there should be consistency from period to period. It was a crime for that game to end on a penalty.

Consolations

I remember writing to my brother in late November right after the Sean Taylor murder and the Glen Hanlon firing, that this was the worst time I ever remembered in the history of Washington sports. I stand by that statement, but I have a new one as well. There has been no better time to be a Caps fan than right now. I remember the 98 run vividly, and I love that team, but I love this one more. We are going to be a force in the NHL for a LONG time, and it’s overdue. Moreso even than the talent on the team, who would have thought in November that the Capitals would have mattered to this town. I work in an office and I’m the only Caps fan. Mondays in the fall everyone is gathered in each others offices talking about the Redskins, and I miss being able to share my excitements about my other favorite team as well. That has all changed. Most of the guys in the office are watching the Capitals and even worse, blaming me for not telling them about such a great team earlier. I hope we can carry that excitement over to next October, because I’ve seen this town transformed into a hockey town twice in my lifetime. I hope we never have to see a third time, because I believe this one can stick. The Caps finally matter in D.C. and it’s all on account of the best owner in sports Ted Leonsis.

When the new jerseys were unveiled I had a conversation with my dad about who’se names we were going to get on the back of them. The only player we could decide was a lock was Ovie. If we had that conversation now, we’d be discussing Backstrom, Semin, Green, Poti, Huet, Laich, Brashear, or Bradly. That just goes to show you how far this team has come in this year alone.

Depressions

I heard from a co-worker that after the game Olaf Kolzig took the nameplate off his locker. Kolzig is my favorite Capital of all time. I won’t go into too much detail, but if he truly is done with the Washington Caps then it’s the final chapter in the story of the man who WAS the Washington Capitals. I understand and fully back Gabby’s decision to play Huet down the stretch and into the playoffs. Huet was playing stronger and gave us more of a chance to win, which is what really matters at the end of a game. Still I would have liked to be able to give Olie the standing ovation he deserved had he come out for a few minutes in the playoffs. I was there for his 300th win, and the love the fans have for this man is overpowering. I really hope that if Kolzig retires that we have one last chance to thank him. I truly hope that we do right by him and give him the offer he deserves. It would break my heart to see Olie in a thrasher’s uni or to retire anything but a Washington Capital.

One final time I would like to thank Ted and George for giving us this team, and for bringing back the city that had forgotten about the Caps. For me it doesn’t matter how they play, I’m going to and watching the games no matter what. Even so, it is much nicer being one of 19,000 in a red clad sea of fans, than trying to ignore the flyers and penguin fans who always made it down to games during the regular season. Thank you for that Ted.

As for now, my job is entering the busiest season of the year, I’ve got list upon list of things to be thinking about, but the only thing on my mind is the Capitals next October.

Bringing it back home!

THATS RIGHT BOYS! Not to get all braggy in only my 3rd post but just check the timestamp and prediction i made in my last one. Caps win - Check, Ovechkin with 2 goals - Check. I'm so stoked right now i can barely sit down.

A few notes.

The cardiac caps strike again. Did they really have to let Philly out to a 2-0 lead before they made their move. I mean with so many multiple overtimes, redskins 4th quarter meltdowns, and some of the worst traffic in the country, my hair is gonna be falling out in clumps.

That first goal from Semin to Backstrom to Semin to Backstrom was one of the most perfectly executed plays i've seen in a long time. I remember envying the old Red Wings back in the day because of their crisp passing and shots on goal and now we're the ones causing other teams and their fans distress. I'm also totally enamored with the way Backstrom plays the passing game. He reminds me of Joey Juneo back in the day, only he knows when to pull the trigger.

The second goal which Semin scored was just the best representation as to why he has been the MVP of this series. It's a shame he was injured all year because for my money i put Ovechkin and Semin well ahead of Crosby and Malkin, but i suppose it's just a matter of time before the rest of the league finds that out as well.

What can i say about Ovechkin that hasn't already been said? I'm just thrilled he got the chance to prove to Philly and the rest of the league that he's the real deal. It was only a matter of time before he started pulling out big games and personally i'll take 2 game winners and a game sealer, over 6 meaningless ones any day.

Gotta commend the Caps penalty killing while we're at it as well. That 4 on 3 and then 5 on 3 really scared me, but it was as if the Caps were willing themselves to win. Just picture Gandalf standing infront of the big orange demon (coincidence?) shouting "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" at the top of his lungs. (I know that previous sentence just earned me my "nerd reference" brown belt, but i don't care.)

All in all that was one of the most satisfying win's i can ever remember. I put it up there with Sean Taylor blocking the Dallas Field Goal two Novembers ago as recent great wins go. I'll leave you with one final challenge.

Is there any sweeter sound in the world than 20,000 Philadelphia fans completely silent?

Caps v Flyers game 6 predictions

Alright here it is folks. Game 6 of a classic reinvigoration of an longstanding and always present feud. Here's what i think we have in store for tonight.

I think this is Ovie's breakout game. He's just been too quiet, and if there's anything we've learned about him is that he preforms in the clutch. I think he gets 2 goals tonight and that the Caps keep up the momentum that really started Thursday. Of course i'm predicting a win for the boys, but i really see this game taking the wind out of the Flyer's sails.

They need to get out early and take the fans completely out of this one. Those flyer fans are pretty rabid, and if they get a few hits or a cheap goal like they've been getting early in the 1st, they're gonna be brutal. A quick Ovie goal in the first is gonna knock them completely off balance and trust me that if this game comes home for #7 there's no way Boys in Red lose that one. Game's about to start and i'm hunkering down in my red #8 jersey and best immitation of "Game Over" Mike Green's Hawk.

Unleash the Fury!

Introduction

At the urging of my wife, Rory, I have decided to expend my sports energies into the endless chasm of sports blogs rather than boring her with them. I think she also believes this might save a few years at the end of my life, since my passion for DC sports and the subsequent frustration basically gets balled up and absorbed until either my hair falls out, i keel over from a stroke, or both.

My main sports focuses are on the Redskins and the Capitals. I want to get behind the Nats, and i love the look of the new stadium, but they're so abysmal right now that i can't get emotionally invested in them. They start putting together a few wins and i'll hop on board for the rest of my life. As for the Wizards, i was never much of a NBA fan as a kid, and thats carried over. I think i would love the talent the Wiz have if i paid a lot of attention, but right now i keep track of the whole NBA and have enjoyed seeing the West especially take off this year.

My besides the Caps and Skins, the sport that gets most of my attention is MMA, specifically the UFC. My favorite fighter is GSP, who if only for his accent scores about an 8.5 on the unintentional comedy scale. Fortunately he brings it in the octagon as well and for my money is the best pound for pound fighter in the world. The potential for an Anderson Silva vs GSP fight has me salivating. I'm heavily into the Ultimate Fighter and Rampage and Forrest have been hilarious this season. As much as i love Forest though, i think Rampage is going to completely handle him once their fight comes around this summer. If there is one thing you can't count Forrest out on though is his ability to take a beating. He reminds me of 1999 Mic Foley in that regard, as his only real hope is that his opponent will get tired of punching him in the face long enough for him to score a submission. Still don't think it'll happen against Rampage though.

I was a 1998 wrestling fan, but abandoned it around 2005. I love a good match, and would probably be into ROH if it were on free tv, but WWE and TNA don't seem to be in the wrestling business anymore, rather the sports entertainment biz, which kinda sucks.

I also love video games and have a few shows on TV that i might touch on, but only if they really bowl me over. I would like to keep this sports related, but we'll see where it goes. Lets end this bit off with a short list or two.
